"Tracking" means different things depending on the courier service you use. Understanding the difference between scan-based tracking and live GPS tracking helps you set expectations — and choose the right service when visibility matters.
Scan-Based Tracking (Parcel Networks) Most parcel network tracking works via depot scans. Your item is scanned when it enters a collection point, scanned again at a sorting hub, and scanned on the delivery van. The tracking page shows a timeline of these events. This is informative but not real-time — there can be gaps of many hours between scans, and you have no visibility of where your item physically is between scan points. If the item misses a scan, the tracking page simply shows no update.
Live GPS Tracking (Dedicated Couriers) Same-day dedicated courier services use a different model. The driver's mobile device or vehicle tracker transmits a GPS position every 30–60 seconds. Your tracking link shows the driver's actual location on a map, in real time. You can see when the driver has departed, their current position, and an estimated arrival time that updates dynamically. This is genuinely useful for time-sensitive deliveries — you can tell your recipient "the driver is 20 minutes away" because you can see it on the map.
Tracking Notifications and POD A well-designed courier tracking system also sends automated notifications at key milestones: driver assigned, driver en route for collection, item collected, driver en route to delivery, and delivered (with POD). These can be sent to both sender and recipient. On delivery, the electronic proof of delivery — including signature capture and often a photo — is automatically sent to the booker. This creates an instant, timestamped delivery record without any manual paperwork.
Why Tracking Matters for Business For businesses, live tracking has practical value beyond peace of mind. It enables proactive communication with your customer or recipient. It provides a defensible audit trail for time-sensitive deliveries (legal, medical, contractual). It allows you to spot delays early and escalate. And it removes the need to call the courier for updates. When you book with X-Eagle, you receive a live tracking link automatically — share it with your recipient so they're ready when the driver arrives.
