Class 8 corrosive substances courier
Class 8 covers substances that attack skin and metal — acids, alkalis, battery electrolyte, descalers and many industrial cleaning chemicals. The practical issues are packaging integrity and segregation: a leaking corrosive damages the vehicle and anything travelling with it, so Class 8 is rarely a good candidate for a shared load.
Why corrosives usually want a dedicated van
Corrosive leaks do not evaporate and they do not stay put. A split container of acid in a multi-drop van can write off every other consignment on board and the load floor with it. Where the value or the sensitivity of the other freight is meaningful, a dedicated vehicle is cheaper than the alternative.
Segregation also matters: Class 8 substances must be kept apart from materials they react with, and some combinations cannot travel together at all.
What we ask before quoting
The UN number, the packing group, the container type and size, and whether the goods are being collected from a site with loading equipment or carried by hand. Acid in 25 litre drums is a different job from the same acid in 1 litre bottles inside a carton.
This page explains the framework; it is not a compliance opinion on your consignment. Send us the UN number, the packing group and the weight or volume per package and we will tell you in writing which route it travels under.
What X-Eagle will carry
We carry dangerous goods that fall under Limited Quantity, Excepted Quantity or the ADR 1.1.3.6 threshold today. For a placarded full-ADR load we will tell you so and help you find a carrier who holds the certificate, rather than take the job and work it out later.
Common questions
Can corrosives travel with other goods?
Sometimes, but segregation rules apply and some combinations are prohibited. Given the damage a leak causes, a dedicated vehicle is often the sensible choice for anything above small retail packaging.
Is battery acid dangerous goods?
Yes. Sulphuric acid electrolyte is Class 8 corrosive. Filled lead-acid batteries have their own UN numbers and provisions, which differ from the acid shipped on its own.
Do industrial cleaning chemicals need an ADR courier?
It depends on concentration and packaging. Many concentrated descalers and alkaline cleaners are Class 8; the same brand in a diluted retail bottle may not be regulated at all. Check section 14 of the safety data sheet.
Send us the UN number and we will tell you how it travels
The UN number, the packing group and the quantity per package settle it in one call. We will put the answer in writing before anything is collected.
