Dangerous goods courier, East Midlands

The East Midlands is around ninety minutes to two hours from our Bradford yard, so Chesterfield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester are same-day collections when booked in the morning. We carry Limited Quantity, Excepted Quantity and under-threshold consignments on a dedicated vehicle with the transport document and extinguisher required. We hold no ADR vocational certificates and no DGSA appointment, so placarded loads are not ours to take.

What moves across the East Midlands

The East Midlands carries a varied chemical load. Derby and Burton hold engineering, rail and brewing chemistry; Loughborough and Leicester hold laboratory, pharmaceutical and polymer activity; the Chesterfield and north Derbyshire corridor keeps a long-standing speciality chemical and coatings base; and Nottingham has a research and diagnostics cluster.

What that produces for a courier is consignments of a few litres or a few kilos with a deadline attached: analytical samples, battery cells for test, Limited Quantity volumes of coatings and adhesives, laboratory reagents moving between sites. The volume is small, the urgency is real, and the networks will not take it labelled.

How quickly we get there

Chesterfield is about an hour and a quarter from Bradford, Derby and Nottingham closer to the two. Booked in the morning these are same-day jobs with a direct dedicated run.

Towns we collect from across the East Midlands: Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Chesterfield, Loughborough, Mansfield, Newark, Burton upon Trent, Hinckley, Alfreton, Ilkeston, Worksop. If your site is not on that list it is almost certainly still covered — the list is the main ones, not the limit.

What we will carry across the East Midlands, and what we will not

We carry dangerous goods that fall under Limited Quantity, Excepted Quantity or the ADR 1.1.3.6 threshold today. For a placarded full-ADR load we will tell you so and help you find a carrier who holds the certificate, rather than take the job and work it out later.

Most carriers will not put that in writing until you have already booked. We would rather lose the enquiry at the first phone call than collect a load we are not certificated to move, because the consequence of getting that wrong lands on your consignment note as well as our licence.

What we need from you before collection

  • The UN number and proper shipping name — this settles almost everything else.
  • The class and packing group.
  • The quantity per inner package and the total on the consignment, because that is what decides whether it stays under the threshold.
  • Whether the outer packaging is marked and in date, and whether the goods are new stock or waste.
  • The collection site and whether it needs a permit or induction, so the driver arrives able to get in.

Send those five things and we will tell you in writing which route the consignment travels under before anything is picked up. If it turns out to need placards and a certificated driver, we will say so and help you place it elsewhere.

Questions we get from shippers across the East Midlands

Is Nottingham or Derby a same-day collection from Yorkshire?

Yes when it is booked in the morning. It is roughly a two-hour run each way, so we will be straight with you about the cut-off for a same-day delivery.

Can you carry diagnostic or biological samples?

Category B biological substances (UN3373) packed to P650 we can carry. Category A infectious substances we cannot, and we will say so rather than take the booking.

What vehicle will come?

Whatever the load needs, from a small van to a 26 tonne. For dangerous goods most jobs are a van or a Luton, and you get a dedicated vehicle either way.

Send us the UN number and we will tell you how it travels

One call settles it. The UN number, the packing group and the quantity per package, and you will have our answer in writing before a vehicle is sent.
